Description
Arctotis are derived from South African plants which bear daisy-like flowers in profusion and attractive grey foliage. The satiny-white petals with just a hint of blue and a distinct blue eye. The flowers are held on tall 60cm (24in) stems and close up late in the day and during any dull weather, but open out fully in warmth and sunshine. These plants are half hardy perennials and will not survive frosty winters. They can however be propogated by cuttings in late summer or by seed in the spring. They like a well drained light soil and can cope with dry conditions quite happily. They give a brilliant splash of colour wherever they are planted but are particularly good in containers. These make good cut flowers.
Propagation Sow seeds in early spring. Just cover with seed compost and place the tray in a polythene bag. Leave to germinate at a temperature of 16-12 degrees centigrade. Germination takes between 21-35 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and place in a cool greenhouse or equivalent place to grow on. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days and only plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
