It is known in multiple names in Malayalam -Madhura cheera / Chekkurmani / Veli cheera / Mysore cheera/ Vitamin cheera/Block cheera/Pressure cheera and common names include Star gooseberry / sweet leaf/ Vitamin plant

One of the most commonly used greens in Kerala is enriched in Vit A, C, Zinc and Iron. There are two varieties are seen – one with white fruits and another in lighter red shade. The tender leaves can be used in cooking poriyal, thorans, vada, salad etc. It is usually planted as a boundary fence/hedge plant and hence the name – Veli cheera. Since it contains almost all vitamins, it got name as Multi Vitamin plant/cheera. Since it lowers the blood pressure & hypertension(so low pressure people need to consume less), it got its name – Pressure cheera.

The plant contains considerable amounts of papaverine, an alkaloid acting as smooth muscle relaxant. It is reported that excessive consumption of raw leaves may cause side effects such as breathing difficulty and other lung related sickness.
